Traditional Tofu meal at Ryoanji Yudofu Garden View restaurant in Kyoto, Japan!

Filmed in the year 2019 B.C. (Before Corona), my friend, Kenta, and I had the chance to have a traditional tofu meal within the Ryoanji Temple grounds.

Shōjin ryōri (精進料理, devotion cuisine) has existed in Japan for centuries and is traditionally free of animal products. The restaurant is named Ryoanji Yudofu (Ryoanji Seven Herb Tofu, in English), because its famous dish is yudofu (boiled tofu with vegetables and seven herbs).

As it is outside of the temple, anyone can enter without purchasing temple entrance tickets. It’s a great way to enjoy the garden and relax after a busy day of site-seeing. It is n the Seigenin building (a minor temple attached to the main temple and situated by the Kyoyoike pond- a 1000-year-old Koi pond).

There is an English menu available. No reservation is needed and there is plenty of seating ( and ventilation 😉 If you have a chance to visit in the future, I highly recommend it.

Address in Japanese: 京都府京都市右京区龍安寺御陵ノ下町13.
